Singapore, the tiny island nation located in South East Asia, is an extremely popular vacation destination. The origin of the island's name can be traced back to an ancient legend, which states that the island was named by an early explorer, who accidentally landed on the island and discovered that it was inhabited by a strange beast. This exotic beast was the Merlion, which had a lion's head and a fish's tail. The explorer then named the island after this strange creature and called it 'Singapura' which means lion in Sanskrit. The Merlion has since then been immortalized in a statue located in Singapore’s Harbor and is popularly used as the symbol of this city state. Apart from being a favored vacation hotspot, Singapore is an important hub for much of the world's business and commercial activity and it hosts one of the busiest ports in the world.
